Office of Technology and Network Services began implementing the wireless network on the Baton Rouge campus beginning in the Fall 2002. The wireless network was to initially provide coverage for residential housing and the library, but expanded to include academic areas of the campus.

In the summer of 2005, the campus was 76% wireless with the purchase of more access points to include more buildings throughout the campus.  With the increase demand of wireless technology, TNS moved on the demand and purchased more equipment to provide a accessible and stable wireless network.

In the future, TNS is moving to implement wireless capabilities in residential dormitories and other areas of the Baton Rouge campus.

Today, 95%of Southern University is wireless capable.  The wireless network is based on the IEEE 802.11a/b/g standard. The wireless network uses secure socket layer encryption for the protection for transfer of data.  The wireless network is available to all Southern University students, faculty, and staff.
